Your Questions, Answered

If you were to ask a hundred diamond dealers “What aspect of a diamond is the most important to its overall brilliance?" most would answer the cut and the colour.
Later in my career however, I realized that is not entirely true. Ultimately, the 5 C’s can all be equally important to the presentation of a diamond. As every diamond is unique, every aspect of it can be equally responsible to how it looks while its price is the underlying factor in making it the one for you or not.

In brief, the 5C's are:

  •     Colour     Cut     Clarity     Carat     Cost

Confused over whether it's worthwhile to buy a D over an H - or if you can even detect the difference? I’ve shown many diamonds to people who will choose a G colour over a D colour not just because of the price. The other aspects of specific diamonds can cause a G colour to actually look better that the D colour. This realization can even be true if both diamonds are an excellent cut. Confusing? You bet. Contact us for an appointment and we can take you through the whole process.

Have you been advised to buy an ideal or excellence cut over a very good cut? Ideal cut diamonds hold a standard measurement of all the angles in a stone that will maximize its optimum brilliance. However, this does not hold true for all finished diamonds. We show our clients a variety of very good cuts, excellent cuts and ideal cuts. Due to the other factors in the 5 C’s, a very good cut can be just as bright if not more so than an ideal cut while costing less. It pays to do a comparison with a various cuts!

Buying a diamond and not looking inside of it is almost like buying a used car and not checking under the hood.
We teach all our clients how to hold a 10x loupe and locate the imperfections within a diamond.
This not only will this assist you in deciding to add it to your ring but it also gives you intimate knowlege of the diamonds you've selected for your jewellery.
It's not uncommon to happen upon two diamonds graded at the same clarity which somehow have a $1000 difference in price. One diamond may be a really strong "SI2" that just missed the "SI1" grade while the other my have squeezed into "SI2" from "I1". The best way for one to decide, is to educate themselves and take look inside!

Many customers come in thinking they need a "VS" grade and end up buying an "SI2" or a really good "I1" after comparing them. The most important clarity factor is the degree of difficulty to actually observing the inclusions with your naked eye. Very often, and can definitely be confusing, an I1 can look better than an SI2! We've proven it to our clients time and time again.
For Example; an SI2 graded stone may have a large blatant dark inclusion in the middle close to the surface. Depending on the size of the diamond, it definitely could be eye visible. On the other hand, An I1 graded clarity diamond with a thin feather or scattered white inclusion could appear "eye clean" meaning that it is largely invisible unless carefully screutenized.
As we always strive to offer our customers the top value for their money and help them in making their budget go as far as possible, we will frequently recommend “eye clean”, well cut, white and less expensive diamonds for our clients. Saving you money on every transaction actually makes this business enjoyable for us. We look forward to earning your referrals and repeat business, so we go to bat for everyone no matter what the budget.

Do you think your bride will prefer a larger stone over a smaller one? (Hint: The answer is YES!!!)
After shopping with the brand-name chain store jewellery retailers, some of our clients come in thinking they only have room in their budget for a half carat when we can actually help them get a beautiful 1 carat or larger.
Here’s how we make that possible:
Compare these two diamonds that are the same price.

1.20 carat SI2 G – Larger, with some possibly visible inclusions, near colourless.
0.90 carat VS2 G – Smaller, with fewer possibly visible inclusions, near colourless.

Which would you choose?
In this instance, 90% of buyers will go for the 30% larger diamond as depending on the stone, the larger slightly lower graded SI2 stone will be carefully selected from our suppliers to be as brilliant and eye clean as possible to give you a better result for your design.

If you’re buying mined diamonds for an engagement ring that’s made to last a lifetime, your first consideration shouldn’t be its raw investment value.
Many diamonds do hold their value and profits can be made if you’ve purchased it well.
With regards to diamonds purchased from major chain store retailers, you'll find most of your funds vanish into their high profit margins rather than the diamond itself so recovering your purchase price will be challenging. As with all valuable commodities, various aspects of global markets can affect future trading prices and valuations.
Currently, the only secondary market that exists for lab grown diamonds is consumer to consumer. So, purchasing a natural stone is the wisest option if you are concerned about the future investment value of your jewellery.
