Don't get Jaded About how Your Diamonds Graded.

Today I had a client reach out to me.

They used my diamond search engine which is comprised of over 40,000 loose diamonds from dealers across North America.

They’d asked if I can advise them on a particular loose diamond they were viewing. “Of course I can. That’s what I’m here for”, I replied.

At first glance, I saw the following: “1.00ct, SI2, D, very good” for what seems to be very cheap (around $4K).
Upon further investigation, I noticed the cert is from IGI. Some of their offices can be very lenient with colour so that instantly confirmed I’d have to see the diamond in person to verify the grade.
Furthermore, the grading noted a “D” colour with a strong blue fluorescence (usually not a good combination). Again, it’s a trait that must be seen in order to evaluate fully. I don’t mind fluorescence as long as it doesn’t affect the brightness and appearance of the diamond. The final thing I noticed was the inclusion plot. All the marks in the plot are in the centre of the diamond. It failed to identify whether they were white or black or if they’re blatantly eye visible.

Those 3 points would generally be big reasons to stay away from this specific diamond. Lesson: Don’t let the price fool you.
