Do it Right, the First Time...

You asked, we answered!
The following is our most important DON’TS when shopping for diamonds and engagement rings.

  1. Don’t buy from a big box retail chain store!
When consumers buy a diamond that is already set in a ring, they really don’t know what they’re getting. Appraisals will split the colour, which colour is it? Colour costs money you know! A diamond could be chipped, inclusions may be covered and stone weight may not be accurate. Scary!

  2. Don’t buy online!
I’ve been buying diamonds daily for over 30 years and never once have I bought one online. There are far too many uncertainties within each diamonds grading to be comfortable with any purchase. My clients have brought in what they've bought online time and time again only for me to tell them they paid a premium price for a substandard diamond. As the old adage goes... “You get what you pay for!”

  3. Do not buy vintage jewelry unless you want vintage jewelry.
People go to Kijiji and eBay for deals on diamonds. If you want to buy someone else’s mistake, then it’s a great idea. Most people will want to get their money back should their engagement go south and they'll be seeking what they paid at retail. Start from scratch, and let us guide you.

  4. Don't buy from a shiny stone store in the mall with a corner location.
Do you have any idea what their rent is? How much their overheads and staff cost them? Someone has to pay for it... I bet it will be you!

  5. Don’t buy at the first store you visit.
Shopping for your engagement ring and diamonds is wise. How else are you supposed to learn whats on offer? Most companies will tell you they’re the cheapest but how are you supposed to know unless you educate yourself and put them to the test.

  6. Don’t blow your budget.
Never let anyone tell you what you should spend. Only you can make that decision. Companies that up-sell are looking for your money and a juicy comission on your sale. Spending less is best, now you can reallocate your remaining budget to your your honeymoon!

  7. Don't buy for you, buy for her!
As much as ego may get in the way, she’s the one that’s wearing it. She’ll be flaunting it to her friends and family. It becomes a fixture of everlasting commitment on her hand not yours. Important lesson in marriage, “Give her what she wants!”

  8. Don't fall for a "sale price".
Many companies will advertise a 50% off sale!!! or use high pressure time limited offers to hurry you into making a purchase. Guess what? That sign may have been up for years and most offers aren't actually discounted. Diamonds never go on sale, the only way one might find a discount is with massive industrial volume ordering but, I don't think we can fit that many diamonds on one engagement ring... yet.

  9. Don't Panic!
You’ll get it done. Keep your head straight and go through the motions of shopping around. Believe in the jewelers with the best reviews whom you believe offer the best product and lowest prices. That’s really all you want. Simple!
